Georgia Digest launched.

News overview

Georgia Digest, a Georgia information media outlet for the Japanese, has been launched.

This media outlet is based in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, and provides information on Tbilisi and other parts of Georgia. It provides accurate and easy-to-understand information needed by Japanese readers, including news, events, tourism, food, real estate and living guides.

A local-based Japanese editorial team produces articles based on reliable primary information and supports the Japanese community interested in Tbilisi.

Background and history

In recent years, Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, has attracted a great deal of attention as a destination for Japanese immigrants and long-term residents: interest in Tbilisi has increased rapidly since 2023 due to the widespread use of remote working and the depreciation of the yen.

However, information on Tbilisi and Georgia available in Japanese was fragmented and there were issues with reliability and accuracy. In particular, incorrect or outdated information on living conditions, events and real estate was often found, creating a barrier to actually considering travel and migration.

In response to this situation, Japanese volunteers living in Tbilisi got together and recognised the need for a media outlet that would provide accurate and practical information on an ongoing basis.

Preparations began in late 2024 and were launched following the establishment of a local reporting structure, the securing of information sources and the formulation of an editorial policy.

Current situation and official announcement

Georgia Digest provides information in seven main categories

  • News: daily updates on the latest news and events in Tbilisi. Gradually expanded to include news from all of Georgia.
  • Events: information on events in Tbilisi by category. Music, art and cultural events.
  • Classifieds: job and job-seeking, renting and renting rooms, lessons, buying and selling, interpreting and translating, and other information necessary for daily life.
